Yesterday was the day for which most of my department students worked hard. It was impulse 2k8, the symposium of CSE department of AIHT. The registration started after 8 and I reached college by 8.25 after going through an accident on the way to college in the morning. I was driving my bike at a speed of around 30kmph which is not fast and is speed required to drive while you are in the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly known as Old Mahabalipuram Road alias OMR). The road is still in construction phase and one should drive slowly while you are in this road. I was driving slower than usual as the road was wet as usual and was trying to overtake a vehicle on my left (I don’t know which vehicle was that but it was going at a speed of around 10kmph or so) slowly as the road was wet and I preferred not to get into some mess and dropped my speed below 30 as there was a car in front of that. Suddenly the car dropped its speed and I was forced to take a left turn. But within a fraction of a second that car driver slowed down even further and I had no other go but to apply the brakes and by mistake I went for the disc brakes (I usually don’t use disc brakes). Since the road was wet and the speed was less for the disc brakes to be used, the bike skid and I fell down and was in lying in the middle of the road. I was unlucky to feel off my bike for the first time since I bought my bike last August.
I was lucky that I didn’t fell in the other side of the road as there were vehicles on the other side. If it had happen then I guess the injury would have been worse or fatal. Thanks to the company nearby the incident who provided first aid. I started off for college after few minutes rest as I was supposed to give the quiz prelims questions papers. The injuries were small. I felt a lot for two reasons which are stupid. First was for the shirt I was wearing (it was my brother’s shirt and was one of my favorite shirt) and second was the bike. The head light has lot of scratches.
Till 9.30 the registration was dull as only 30 or so students registered. We expected around 500 two weeks ago but then all started saying that they have unit tests and can’t come. So my expectations dropped to 100 to 150. But after 10.20 people started coming slowly in batches. And at 1.45 or so the registration said that the total was around 360 (though I didn’t feel the presence of that much). Quiz prelims encountered around 80 teams which was better than I expected after seeing the morning strength. The finals of quiz was conducted at the mini auditorium. I knew that the finals won’t be good. I prepared the technical and general questions in few hours without doing much work on them. Just searched them in one or two places. The technical went bad. The general also was not up to the mark and the audio visual was also not that good. So the quiz on the whole was not good. MIT and CEG teams emerged as the winners. The informal event had the guest from Big FM. I think it was yo yo. Not sure about that. Students were shouting as if they were in a cultural of some nice college. Ad-zap went well and mock interview went well. Marc was sitting with English staff conducting HR!!!! He was one of the HR! LOL. I then went to gaming where the second round was about to get over. I was there till the end of the gaming event and then played for a while with the wounded hand.
I left college at 3.50 with my friends and came home to get little bit of scoldings from parents for the accident.
i am not having a nice time at present. First was my result and now the accident. I guess I have to remain indoors for a while as usual to get better. Hands has small bruises to heal which will take few weeks. On the whole Impulse 2k8 was not a failure (I was expecting it to fail after seeing the registration in the morning). I forgot to mention the lunch. It was nice. ![]()

we enjoyed it a lot da..
Marc was the HR? Shit, I musta gone for the Mock interview. Would have been fun. Needless to say, I’d have been rejected right away.
Considering the way he treated those poor souls, skipping that event was one of the smartest things you’ve done.
Hey vinod, just bcoz marc had to be the HR for mock placement, why do you call the entire symposium a bad one? It was good indeed. First of all my hearty congrats to all those who worked for it, Bcoz w/o having any financial support from the management it is definitely very very hard to conduct such a big event. Hats off to those good hearts who were ready to contribute from their hand.(In my coll, u can get not more than 5 rs).
And secondly, the events were good and well organized. Regarding the quiz it was nice except the tech round. Also it would have been better if it had more rounds or at least more questions per round. It was all over in just half-an-hour. Good effort.
Impulse was made good with all the students` contribution, sure i can see effort from u guys (i was surprised to see Marc the gatherer making his solicit presence over there on a holiday!!)
Lunch was good except for the chappathi with “rich fiber” content. :D..
Well, I won audience prizes in the quiz, so I am happy
. But, damn I missed the lunch. (Not that I would have been allowed in the first place.)
I missed it bcoz of my poor remembrance…Heard that the eve was not a bad one…
Hearty congratulation’s to the impulse moderators….
Vichu:Don’t call it as coll a picnic spot with a yearly pass of 32,500.”Naye” you sld have called me da.
Congrats da Vinod, you managed to spell ‘Gandhi’ wrong.
So are you alright now? I heard it was a very big accident. Your whole arm was bandaged.
Don’t worry about the scratches on the bike. Happens all the time.
It looks like you are painting a pessimistic view of the quiz to stave off comments that it could have been better. I know your tactics.
Anyway, what actually happened was that the judge for Mock Interview didn’t turn up and Sarin got some staff from the English department to be the judges. I didn’t have much to do so helped the judges out with the technical side of the event. More on that on my blog, later.
All the gatherers (Visu, Sundar, Harish…) turned up for the quiz so we are forced to call it a grand success.
@ Visu
I never said that the symposium was bad just because Marc was made HR. LOL
@ Marc
Thanks for telling. I think I typed it in a hurry. My arm is still in pain and I am still feeling for my bike.
i lost in quiz……..in spite going to the finals, the problem was..i usually sucked wid those linux, unix etc…and audio from the film verumaandi was a unexpected one the gen round was okay…
@Vinod, did we get any financial support from our management. I didn’t know about that.
I missed out the event and so i dunno whether it was good or bad..but 360 is a good strength with unit tests and project gng out in many colleges..
The post makes you to ask “Ippo eppadi da irukke” feeling better now?? Vandi venamda.. konja nalaiki busleye suthu…take care
Hmm Marc got an English teacher to volunteer for the HR round? That’s impossible in our college. One needs to have the explicit written permission of the HOD’s of the Computer Science dept, The English dept, The Vice Principal, The Principal, The transport officer, the lunch caterers, the lab assistant in the physics dept, and whoever one can think of, and then there is the nebulous possibility that the member of the staff might not turn up because the event clashed with tea time, or purely out of spite.
Fucking bureaucracy.
(I went to NIIT yesterday to inquire about some courses for a friend, and the bureaucracy that they have in place is mind boggling)
Bureaucracy in NIIT? Huh?
Yes. They made me visit two different counters and thrusted enquiry forms at my face in both places. Raja Deepak who wanted to get his course completion certificate was asked to fill out some form, wait for a week, then come back and inquire again, after which they’d do something and start the process, and get him the certificate before he retired.
Whatever.
@ Harish
@ Sundar
General part was also not good. I know that dude!
@ Rachel
I think we got. I too am not sure about it.
@ Mahesh
Well thats what dad said and I too have decided not to use it for a while. But I think this wont go for long coz I love to drive a lot. But I have to maintain my speed to the normal 40kmph. I rarely go above normal speed. I was going slow that day coz the road was wet and yet the incident happened
Take me with you next time.
nah vinod…the general part was okay…i was really sucking with dat first round and some ques in the final round…
I meant that NIIT sucks. Why were they showing off?
@marc:
Because they can.
@ Harish
Whatever you say, I felt that the quiz was boring and thats the truth. So to make over that I am planning to conduct a quiz soon at Kicha’s place..
I was going to tell you about how NIT doesn’t suck and then I realised you weren’t talking about that.
We were talking about NIIT. Trust Marc to get someone to start off on some completely unrelated topic in a blog.
what ! accident eh ? how r u feeling now da ?
@ Meyya
I am feeling fine now. It was not a big one da. Just small bruises. The bike skid and I fell. Hehehe.
That should be a new sport, bike skid.
Indeed Sundar, Marc can never stick to a given topic. Discuss.
hmmm….ok ok….take care …
Vinod, you are having a makeover a Kicha’s place? Shall I send George? He likes pigtails.
Sundar, you started it. Talking about random things. The title of your blog gives you away.
@ Marc
No thanks. I think it’ll be better without that. But I think it will be better if you come coz you’ll come up with funny answers and that will make a good time pass. LOL
What the! All my answers are serious and totally accurate. For some reason you think don’t give me points.
Thats what you think. But your answers will surely create a humorous environment for a while there. So do come there for that. LOL
Cha. I’m insulted. Sundar, help.
Marc, whenever words fail use the default: “Sari pa vinod, gather panra”.
@ Visu
Thanks a lot for that dude!
whose gathering at whom now???
Of course you da harish
Obvious da, harish.
anyway the whole symposium went out well……we did more than our best………and u r multi management of quiz amd gaming is excellent……..
Dear,Friend
Mahabalipuram, or Mamallapuram, was the chief seaport of the Pallavas who
ruled most portions of South India from the first century B.C to the eighth century
A.D., and it is now recognized as the site of some of the greatest architectural and
sculptural achievements in India. The temples of Mamallapuram, built largely
during the reigns of Narasimhavarman and his successor Rajasimhavarman,
showcase the movement from rock-cut architecture to structural building.
